Instructions
- Use a jigsaw or a handsaw to cut off the top and bottom of the 55 gallon drum. Save these as they can also be used for smaller shields.
- Cut the main part of the 55 gallon drum longways either in half or in thirds. Each section can be its own shield.
- Cutting in half creates a larger shield for one or two people. The end result will be heavier and bulkier.
- Cutting into thirds will create a shield that is suitable for one person. This option is lighter while still covering your vital organs.
- Cut up two pieces of wood that will run horizontal on the inside of the shield. The pieces should be approximately 3″ to 4″ away from each edge. It’s not recommended that you go all the way to the edge.
- Take screws and washers and secure the wood to the inside of the shield. The inside of the shield is the side facing you which curves in slightly. The pieces will run horizontal and be parallel to one another. Space them out approximately 10″ to 12″ from each other. You’ll secure it by inserting your screws from the outside to the inside. This will pierce the 55 gallon drum and then the wood.
- Cut up two pieces of nylon strap that will run vertical on the inside of the shield. One end of the nylon strap will go on the top piece of wood and the other end will go on the bottom piece of wood. With this in mind, judge how long the straps should be and make your cuts. Use a lighter to burn off the frayed edges of the straps.
- The straps will be vertical and parallel to one another. Secure them toward the left and right edges of the wood with washers and screws.
- Insert your arm under one strap and grip the other. The strap you slip your arm under should be snug and the one you grip should be tight with no slack.
- Give your shield some personality! Take some spray paint and show off your skills.
Upgrade Ideas
- Add foam padding to the inside for more support and to reduce impact.
- Wrap the straps in hockey tape for extra grip.
- Swap out the nylon strap that serves as a grip for a metal handle.
- Cut out a rectangle toward the top of the shield and insert plexiglass to act as a window.
